California Contemplates Ultimate Reform: No Welfare

McClatchy reports that California is currently considering slashing their welfare programs to close their staggering $24 billion budget deficit.
A comment authored by “ancona” nicely echoes my sentiments, saying:
…altruism should be taken out of the governments hands and returned to the proper domain. It is not my responsibility to pay for the food and shelter of any other than those people whom I choose to pay for.
“Social programs” are little more than vote buying schemes, and always end up sucking more and more money out of our pockets. I do not recall having been asked whether or not I wanted to participate in the welfare program in the form of a donor.
It is far far [too] easy for perfectly healthy individuals to get endless benefits from the welfare system in California, and the liberal bloc that currently rules the state will do everything in their power to maintain the status quo.
