Republican Infidelities

What is it with the Republican Party these days? As if their self-destructive infighting and their self-destructive lack of cohesive policy and leadership weren’t bad enough, now they have infidelity scandals to further their self-destruction.

In back to back explosions a week apart, first Nevada Senator John Ensign has his extramarital affair plastered all over the news, and now it’s South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford’s turn. What makes Sanford’s affair all the more bizarre is the fact that he disappeared for several days to run off to Argentina to be with her, with no one apparently aware of his whereabouts.

Granted, his wife had (justifiably) thrown him out just prior to the disappearnace and he must’ve been at the end of his rope as a result, leaving him somewhat psychologically impaired when he decided to pick up and disappear. But, too bad. This is not some Joe Schmoe—this is the governor of a state, a person with responsibilities to four and a half million people.

The fact that both of these politicians were talked about as possible presidential candidates in 2012 only goes to show that we’re scraping the bottom of the barrel, and that the best we have to offer simply can’t keep their eyes on the prize enough to avoid getting caught with their pants down.

How depressing.

As a side note, for those of you who like watching a disaster unfold, South Carolina’s newspaper, The State, has some pretty juicy email correspondence between Sanford and his Argentinian lover.
