Michelle Obama’s Shopping Carbon Footprint

Dana Milbank wrote a pretty crazy piece in the Washington Post today about what’s involved when Michelle Obama realizes with dismay that she doesn’t have any certified organic Tuscan kale as she’s preparing dinner.
Here’s how Michelle Obama handled this very predicament Thursday afternoon:
The Secret Service and the D.C. police brought in three dozen vehicles and shut down H Street, Vermont Avenue, two lanes of I Street and an entrance to the McPherson Square Metro station. They swept the area, in front of the Department of Veterans Affairs, with bomb-sniffing dogs and installed magnetometers in the middle of the street, put up barricades to keep pedestrians out, and took positions with binoculars atop trucks. Though the produce stand was only a block or so from the White House, the first lady hopped into her armored limousine and pulled into the market amid the wail of sirens.
Then, and only then, could Obama purchase her leafy greens. “Now it’s time to buy some food,” she told several hundred people who came to watch. “Let’s shop!”
Milbank further writes that “considering all the logistics, each tomato she purchased had a carbon footprint of several tons.”
There’s just something about this whole “royalty-amongst-the-peasants” crap that just gets so annoying after a while. If you’re going to act like royals (or, in their partial defense, to be held up as royals by all these fawning idiots out there), then maybe you should spend the next few years letting someone else buy your stupid kale, hm? (And maybe you should keep your dates quiet instead of making them into a whole NYC production bigger than a broadway show itself? )
And, while we’re at it: can we all stop fainting in adulation over Michelle Obama and every little thing she does? The journalistic obsequiousness when it comes to Michelle Obama is utterly nauseating. Reports on her hair, her clothes, her legs… her ARMS! All that talk about her being the next Jackie Kennedy is just over the top already. Are we going to hear about this for the next three and a half years?!

I previously posted about the latest rash of scandalous photos coming out of Afghanistan showing U.S. military atrocities under Obama’s command, and wondering if the media would pick up on it the way they did when it was Bush’s army… Well, here’s a twist I wasn’t expecting: yes, one of the U.S. media, Rolling Stone, [...]
Jeffrey Goldberg, a correspondent for the Atlantic, cast a spotlight on yet another disgustingly overt example of pure bias in the mainstream media, particularly at the anti-Semitic Reuters newswire. He points to a Reuters news item which contains the following despicable sentences: Police said it was a “terrorist attack” — Israel’s term for a Palestinian [...]
In the [sparse] reporting of the Palestinians’ massacre of the Fogel family, several newspapers stand out with their distorted sense of “balance”, i.e., where they feel overwhelmingly uncomfortable describing the barbarity of the Palestinians without at least taking a swipe or two at the Israelis, no matter how patently irrelevant or disgustingly disrespectful it comes [...]
