icon_facebookThe AP is reporting that Facebook has decided to keep dead people as members as a matter of policy. In fact, they have drawn up a list of modifications to the account to accommodate obvious issues with it being owned by a dead person, such as:

—The site will remove any contact information.
—The site will bar people from logging in.
—The person’s profile won’t appear in the “suggestions” section of Facebook.
—Only the deceased person’s confirmed friends will be able to find them in a search.

Seems a bit strange. First of all, how is Facebook supposed to know when someone has died? Obviously that needs to be actively flagged as such by a family member or friend with account access, in which case, why don’t they just leave it up to that member to decide what to do about it? Or, if no one has access, obviously a family member will need to inform the company of the death, in which case, again, why don’t they leave the decision up to the family to decide what to do?

Maybe they need a “last will and testament” section in their account settings to allow users to decide what should happen to their account when they die…?
